Melchiorre Bega was born in Caselle di Crevalcore (BO) in 1898. He graduated in architecture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. From 1941 to 1944 he directed, after its founder Gio Ponti, the magazine Domus, together with Pagano and Bontempelli.

He worked on the redevelopment of old buildings, villas and businesses early in his career. Later he established himself in Italy and abroad. In the post-war period he devoted himself more to architectural and urban planning.
